COATS Diversion Referral Form

Please ensure you submit this referral while the client is still engaged in treatment with your agency.

The purpose of Diversion is to divert clients from receiving a further sentence.

Diversion referrals are voluntary in the sense that clients are not mandated to attend AOD treatment however they are still classified as COATS referrals. The agency will need to ask the client questions to identify if they are eligible for NIDS Diversion funding. In most cases, clients will have future court dates.

To be eligible for NIDS Diversion a client must not be on an existing Justice order or caution. Any of the following sources may refer clients to treatment or assessment:

  • CHAD Nurse (Custodial Health Alcohol and Drug Nurse)
  • Child Protection Services
  • Courts (excluding Children’s Court)
  • Drink/Drug Drive Providers
  • Family Court
  • Police
  • Salvation Army Chaplain
  • Solicitor
